Once upon a time, the funeral director provided a list from which one could choose the funeral music. While most funeral directors would be happy to offer suggestions today, the friends and/or relatives of the deceased are usually somewhat familiar with what kind of music their loved one preferred, or familiar with music that reminds them of the person who has passed on.

Funeral Music 101: What To Consider

Hymns and instrumentals were traditionally used in the past for memorial services and funerals. While they can still be used today, more personalized services are created through the use of songs that were extremely important and meaningful in the life of the deceased and those around them. You may need some inspiration when choosing funeral music, especially when you are devastated by your loss.

Here at American Heritage Cemetery & Funeral Home, we can and will look into the funeral music, and offer any recommendations in who to turn to during your time of loss and need.

  • General Tips for Choosing Music
  • When choosing music for a funeral, please consider the following tips:
  • Check with your venue.
  • Find out if there will be any copyright issues.
  • Consider what the deceased would like to have played.
  • Before you choose a song, make sure you listen closely to the lyrics.
  • To set the tone of the service, choose appropriately.
  • The person in question should be reflected through the music.
  • Play as many songs as you want but please make sure to consider your timeline.
  • Do not rush your choices – give it plenty of thought.

Choosing Mood and Theme

In choosing the mood and theme, what kind of message would you want to get across with the music you choose? You may decide to go with something happy, joyful, or even funny to celebrate your loved one’s life. You may also decide to choose something more poignant. However, if you do not feel as if those songs are appropriate, here are a few category choices to consider:

  • Classical funeral songs
  • Modern funeral songs
  • Reassuring funeral songs
  • Poignant funeral songs
  • Happy funeral songs
  • Note: You will also need to decide if the music you choose will be pre-recorded or sung by a particiular live performer.

Music Genre

There can be a vast array of music choices included in a funeral/memorial service. However, one may choose to only stay with one particular genre. Here are some suggestions:

  • Hymns
  • Classical music
  • Musical soundtracks and music from films
  • Contemporary songs
  • Sports and TV associated music
