For the one we missAfter the death of a loved one, you (or they) may have chosen cremation. Once the body is cremated, what will be done with the ashes?

The caretaker will put the ashes of your loved one into a receptacle chosen by you. If you have not chosen a permanent receptacle for them, you may go with the temporary one, until you can find the perfect place to store and memorialize the ashes. Some people prefer to scatter the ashes of the deceased while others keep them. In fact, today, there are numerous things that can be done with the ashes of cremated individual. We’ll explore those later. Right now, let’s look at how to choose the right cremation urn for a loved one.

The Right Color

A cremation urn can be a very personal thing. Whether there is a favorite color the deceased would have preferred for the urn, or the feeling an urn gives you when you look at it, there are numerous factors to consider where the cremation urn is concerned.

Designs and Patterns

If you want a truly one-of-a-kind cremation urn, choose one with an intricately carved design. Something ornate. Here are a couple of suggestions:

  • A gorgeous bronze inscribed dove pattern on a bird-shaped urn.
  • A butterfly and flower pattern inscribed on a cremation urn.

The Urn’s Location

Where are you going to keep the urn? Will you be putting in a place of honor, storing it away, keeping it near you, etc.? If you’re burying it or simply storing it – or if you decided to scatter the ashes – the kind of urn you choose isn’t going to matter as much. Biodegradable urns are more suitable for burial. Display urns are frequently made from aluminum, brass, bronze, or some other decorative metal.

Urn Shapes

The identity of an urn is defined, in part, by its shape. There are many to choose from – and that can make it difficult. Shape and color can go hand in hand. Whatever feeling the urn gives you when you look at it could help you determine what is appropriate. How do you feel when you see it?

 The Urn You Choose

A different, unique story is told by each pattern, color, shape, etc. To memorialize your loved one, consider creating a functional piece of art through the perfect blend of design elements.

Not everybody chooses an urn, however. The following can also be done with cremated ashes:

  • Stuffed animal urn (so you can give the deceased a hug)
  • Turn the ashes into stained glass, hand blown glass, or jewelry
  • Incorporate them into a vinyl record (if you don’t know what that is, ask grandma or grandpa)
  • Fly them to the moon
  • The ashes can be incorporated into a piece of ammunition, fireworks, etc. (The deceased can go out with a bang!)
  • Have the ashes mixed into the ink for a tattoo
  • Mix the ashes with dirt to plant a tree
  • Have the ashes incorporated into the building of a reef
  • Inter/bury the ashes
  • Scatter the ashes appropriately
