Green leaves backgroundThere can be little doubt as to the effect we have had on Mother Earth. We have deteriorated numerous resources, driven animals into extinction, polluted the atmosphere, and more. Concerned individuals are looking for a way to give back to the planet, even if it’s just a little bit. Though many people stick with tradition, when it comes to funerals, burial, etc., others are breaking away and opting for end-of-life arrangements that are more eco-friendly.

Here, we will review natural burial environmental benefits. You may decide to do away with tradition and opt for this eco-friendlier choice.

Natural Burial – Not a Particularly New Concept!

There’s nothing new about the concept of a natural burial. Deceased individuals were buried this way for centuries. After the American Civil War, the process became less popular. However, over the last 20 years, natural burial grounds are springing up everywhere.

Though lots of people are concerned about the environment, not everyone is on board with this type of end-of-life arrangement, however. As to whether or not it’s right for you or your loved one, you’ll be able to make more informed decisions after reading the following.

Natural Burials – The Environmental Benefits

The use of sustainable materials is a huge benefit where eco-friendly, natural burials and green burials are concerned. “Green burials” differ, however, from natural burials in that a casket can be used and embalming fluid is allowed. A biodegradable container for the deceased is used rather than concrete vaults, hardwood, conventional caskets, etc. Even with a natural burial, a biodegradable casket or simple shroud is all that is used (or nothing at all). For green burials, a casket can be made of biodegradable bamboo, wicker, cardboard, willow, etc.

Because chemicals harm the ecosystem, as well as being hazardous to funeral workers, embalming is not conducted in the case of natural burials. The chemicals used also discourage decomposition, thereby inhibiting microbial decomposers which are needed for natural recycling.

The acreage of traditional, manicured cemeteries cannot be used for anything other than their sole purpose. At first glance, most people can’t distinguish a wooded area or open field from a green burial site or natural burial grounds. These areas can eventually become gardens, parkland, and/or passed on to wildlife trusts.

This may seem exceptionally odd to some. But the entire point is that the body of the deceased is returned to the earth from which it came… naturally, peacefully, and safely.
