When it comes to funerals, burials, etc., for centuries, traditional practices have been in place. But today, more and more people are considering a natural burial. Why do some prefer these over more traditional ones? Are there truly any natural burial benefits ? The following information will serve to answer those questions, and more.

First of all, however, why is this becoming a trend? Was there a problem with traditional burials? In many cases, people go with traditional burial because that’s what they’re familiar with. They’re not aware that other options exist (aside, possibly, from cremation).

Traditional Burial

In burials that are considered more traditional, the deceased/body is protected from dirt, moisture, and more because it is sealed in a vault, and inside that, a casket. There are also mausoleums and other aboveground burial options. Embalming fluids are frequently used to preserve the body of the deceased for viewing/services.

Here’s the problem: The traditional method of burial and preparation is not considered sustainable. Not only to the environment, but to the people who work with them, embalming fluids are looked upon as toxic. Additionally, concrete is used to make vaults, precious woods and/or metal are used in the making of resource-heavy caskets, etc. Even a monument or grave marker draws on resources that could eventually be considered scarce.

Natural Burials

The above traditional burial characteristics cause concern for exceptionally eco-friendly minded people. Therefore, the benefits of a natural burial do away with those concerns. With many of today’s families, environmental standards resonate. So, natural burial upholds those standards by protecting the health of funeral workers, conserving resources, and preservation of habitat.

Specifically, advantages of natural burials include the following:

  • You have a better feeling of control over the body of your loved one or your own (in the case of preplanning your own end-of-life procedures).
  • The natural habitat is better conserved.
  • A safer environment is created. This applies not only to doing away with the use of embalming fluids, but sources that are used in the production of steel, concrete, etc. for caskets, vaults, and more.
  • The carbon footprint is reduced.
  • Precious wood sources are conserved.
  • Metal resources are conserved.
  • Other precious materials are conserved as well. Granite, for example, is often used in the making of memorials and other grave markers.
